23 Aug Salt: Sustainable Lighting Uses Ocean Water to Power Communities
Co-Founder & CEO: Aisa Mijeno
Over 7000 islands in the Philippines don’t have access to electricity. These communities relied on kerosene/battery powered lamps and candles as their main source of lighting that are both inefficient and costly. Salt – a sustainable and cost effective ecologically designed lamp powered by tap water and table salt (or ocean water!)
Salt lamps are safe and don’t cause fires, unlike kerosene and can provide an energy source to recharge a phone during emergencies.
It uses the science behind the Galvanic cell, the basis for battery-making, using the electrolytes in non-toxic, saline solution to generate charge making the entire process safe and harmless.
Why Salt is so great: Having access to reliable and efficient lighting is a key necessity for communities to progress, socially and economically. Even without a physically store, Salt, is seeing a huge demand for its lamps from communities. The company is also working with NGOs and partners to help those in need.
